HHK's Review On "Dat Kid From Cleveland"

Wednesday, May 13, 2009
Dat Kid From Cleveland By Kid Cudi

Before I get too into it, let me explain that I do enjoy this mixtape. I appreciate Kid Cudi, and I hope his career takes off in a big way.

I feel I have to explain that beforehand, because Kid Cudi makes music that I think people would hate on without giving it the benefit of the doubt, because he doesn’t necessarily fit the description of what you think hip hop should be. I also feel like that is a rant for another day; to cut it short, when you learn to relax as a fan of music, feel free to check out the mixtape and the rest of my review. :)

Kid Cudi is probably not going to be in anyone’s “top 5 emcees” list, and that is alright. Most hip hop heads would consider this a “guilty pleasure” (pause) when put against the rest of their CD collection. Really, you could say Kid Cudi’s music is that quality G.O.O.D. Music you’ve come to appreciate from Kanye and the rest of his label. Speaking of which, the mixtape hosts an impressive list of features, Including Kanye West, Common, and Consequence to name a few. Most of the songs on the tape will leave your head bobbing and keep you in a light-hearted mood.

The Mixtape does not go without its flaws, however. Some tracks don’t feel right, notably the Kevin Rudolf-assisted “Welcome 2 the World”. In fact, Cudi loses points just for having Kevin Rudolf on his tracklisting, in addition to it not being a good song. All that aside, there are other tracks on the mixtape that you may find yourself skipping on subsequent listens. Cudi also does about as much singing as he does rapping on the tape, and while you will notice he isn't as quality a singer as your favourite artist, it's not necessarily bad, either.

While one can argue Kid Cudi’s music has no substance, one must appreciate the sense of free-spiritedness that the music provides. Sometimes you need music that is just for chilling out. I would suggest you give it a listen, even if you feel he isn’t the next [insert your favourite rapper’s name] or whatever.

WHUTTUP DRIZZY?!

Rick Ross Rockin' Bootleg Shades On The Cover Of XXL Magazine. LV Sends XXL A Letter.

LOL @ the Maybach tattoo

The XXL Editors received this letter from Louis Vuitton concerning the May 2009 cover of Rick Ross.

Dear Editor:

We were dismayed to see the cover of the May 2009 issue of XXL Magazine, which features a photo of Rick Ross wearing a pair of sunglasses prominently featuring counterfeit Louis Vuitton trademarks. Because the photo has generated considerable confusion among your readers and Louis Vuitton customers among others, we feel it is important to clarify several points.

The first is that the sunglasses Mr. Ross is wearing were not made by Louis Vuitton, and in fact, are counterfeit. Louis Vuitton did not grant permission to Mr. Ross or to whoever did make the sunglasses to use our trademarks. The second is that no affiliation, sponsorship or association exists between Rick Ross or XXL and Louis Vuitton. The third is that counterfeiting is illegal.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to correct the confusion.

Sincerely,

Michael D. Pantalony, Esq.
